COKE LIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL PT.2 – 19-20 VIII 2011 – KRAKÓW, POLAND

(First part can be found here)

Coke always marks two things for me: the dawn of the summer festival season and time I’ve started comming to Kraków more often. This year it was also a beggining of an almost 2,5 week trip with three festivals, some vacation time and lots of drawing (thanks to Ulson, who made me come back to drawing..again!). And almost every time I come to Coke there’s always something wrong – in the previous years it has been my camera, my almost-broken knee. This year it was the uncertian weather, which affected the Pukkelpop and me limping (kids, never try to go into a moshpit after the doctor advised you not to do so – but the Deftones gig was AWESOME!). However, it was the most awesome Coke ever – lot’s of friends and workmates, great gigs (Editors blew me away..) and the weather turned out to be more awesome then Barney Stinson will ever be.

Coke was the first time I’ve managed to test out my new lens Nikkor 80-200, which worked just great (Of course, it’s not the Nikkor 70-200 mm F2.8 VR II, so it has some flawns). Pretty different focal length from what I was used to (50-150). So after completing some new lenses, lamps and acessories there was only one target left – a full-frame body. And because my D300 was not in such a great condition and I was tired of waiting for Nikon’s new model to be announced in the late October I purchased a D700. But that’s another story. If I ever win the lottery. I’m going straight to the store to buy a 14-24 2.8, 24-70 28 and a whole bunch of primes…

Coke Live Music Festival Pt.1 – 19-20 VIII 2011 – Kraków, Poland

I hate shooting a big festival and having the worst lights ever. The small tent had only rear and upper lights and no fronts. ISO as high as 3200 won’t help a thing and the only lights available are really shitty. You either have to have Nikon’s SBs scattered around the set or be a Superman to come up with good visual stuff. Apart from that it was the first time I’ve tested Nikkor 80-200, which, with a crop, happens to be a great zoom. I’m selling my old Sigma 50-150, because it’s not an FX lens. If you’re interested in buying, contact me (froger3[@]gmail.com).

The publication got the colored ones but I played more with the pics and did the no-so-festival-like black and white style I usually use for hardcore and small club show. The rest of Coke Live is too colorfull to be published in BW – just the gigs from the small stage + Interpol, because their light sucked even more then those in Barcelona. However, I’m pretty happy with the shots and the post-production. Never seen such pics of Olivia Anna Livki or Parias done in that way!
Fans of You And Me At Six or The Kooks be patient. Those will be coming in shortly!

Didn’t have time to upload stuff from the summer but I’m still trying . “Pitty” more and more photos come in:)

Equality March @ Kraków, 2009

Because it’s back-up friday (be sure to back-up every 2 weeks – it once saved my life:), I was coping, moving, removing old folders and doing some rearangements on my HDD’s. In the meantime I found some old pics from Kraków – from the Equality March and thought it would be fun to put something non-musical here. It’s hard to belive it was almost 2 years ago and how much has changed since then. I’m often told that if the pics are from an Equality March there should be only Equality March pics in it – no fascists, no landscapes, no street, no police-beating-somebody. And I have to disagree – I’m shooting the event as a whole, not 50% of it. It’s like shooting a festival and completely omitting the crowd.

My friends told me that marches in Kraków are pretty dangerous – people throwing rocks and other things. Nothing happened but the other Black Box Photo girl almost got hit by a pot that was thrown at the crowd. She’s known for her ninja skills so everything turned out okay. And, what’s the most important, our cameras and lenses came home in a perfect state.

2 Strange Days in Kraków

Sorry for such a big lack of updated. I’ve been on the road (Trójmiasto-Warsaw-Kraków) over and over again.

I think that everybody know what happened on the 10th of April. A few days after a decision was made to bury the president’s and the first lady’s bodies in Kraków. Many, many people came, most of them with cameras. Me also – something happened and I had the choice of looking at a blank screen for the whole day, or just do, what I haven’t done in a long time. Shoot some street (if you can call it that). No coffins, no officials, no crying, no other things that you can easily find on news pages.

The day before the ceremony Kraków was like a ghost-town: I’ve never seen anything like this in this city. Pretty strange.

You can see a lot of mistakes on these photos: sometimes there was too much sharpen used, sometimes the frames are really, really bad, and some things are not symmetrical or cut. I am aware of that but have not much to say apart from the fact that I like the photos from the day before the funeral more. If you can even say that you “like” something like photos from such an event.

The pics reminded me of how I love my Fisheye 2 lomo camera that was stolen from me two months ago. If I had a bag of money (and two piles hidden under my bed;) I’d just shoot, shoot, shoot film. With small-toy-thought-removing-frame-capturing cameras. And 2 years ago I laughed and said that “there’s no difference”. There is.
